Galatians 5:14 (The Message)
For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself.
Notice the last four words in our Success Scripture this week: “…as you love yourself.” To be effective loving others, the first person you must love is you. The first, and most important, ingredient when it comes to loving yourself is to receive God’s love personally.
Receiving God’s love personally includes two things: How you see yourself and how you feel about yourself. Self-image is how you see yourself; self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. How you see yourself and how you feel about yourself are two of the biggest influencers when it comes to your overall success in life. Receiving God’s love personally equates to seeing yourself the way God sees you and feeling about yourself the way God feels about you.
The easiest way to receive God’s love personally is to base your worth and value on what God thinks about you, not on what people think about you. This means God’s love for you is more important than what people think about you; it means God’s opinion of you means more than the opinions of other people; it means peer pressure will always be filtered through the lens of who you are in Christ. As a child of God, the basis for your self-image and self-esteem is found in knowing who you are in Christ.
As a kingdom citizen, you must embrace your worth and value based on the fact that you are the righteousness of God in Christ. You must believe that God loves you apart from your performance, behavior, and achievements. You must live your life according to who you are in Christ. Your self-image and self-esteem should reflect the unlimited potential that is yours because the life, nature, and ability of the Creator of the universe reside within you.
