Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
The phrase, “and all these things shall be added to you,” refers to the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. In the context of this verse, Jesus tells us how to receive God’s protection and provision, which includes getting our basic needs met.
The first key to receiving God’s protection and provision (getting your needs met) is to put the Kingdom of God first in your life. This means trusting Jesus as the Lord of your life while discerning the difference between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of the world. Simply put, the Kingdom of God is based on God’s Word applied through faith and love. The kingdom of the world is based on the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, also known as the pursuit of fame, fortune, and pleasure. Invest your time, talent, and treasure in the Kingdom of God instead of investing it in the kingdom of the world.
The second key to getting your needs met is found in the phrase, “His righteousness.” This isn’t referring to your righteousness – it’s referring to God’s righteousness, as indicated by the word “His.” Receiving God’s righteousness equates to becoming the righteousness of God in Christ. The phrase, “His righteousness” (in Matthew 6:33) is the same as “the righteousness of God” (in 2 Corinthians 5:21). In other words, it’s not your ability to live right that guarantees your protection and provision as a citizen in the Kingdom of God; it’s you becoming the righteousness of God in Christ and then living like the righteous new creation person you really are. You can live like the righteous new creation person you really are!
