John 21:6, 11 (NKJV)
6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.
11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken.
The theme of Jesus’ third post-resurrection appearance to His disciples is increase. Jesus showed Himself to the disciples by bringing increase into their lives. The words “multitude” (in verse 6) and “large” (in verse 11) signify increase. The multitude of 153 large fish that the disciples caught almost broke their fishing net.
Increase means to make greater, as in number, size, strength, or quality. The third post-resurrection appearance of Jesus to His disciples is an example of increase. Jesus appeared to the disciples while they were fishing. These disciples had been out fishing all night and had caught nothing. The next morning Jesus appeared to them and told them to cast their net on the right side of the boat. The disciples acted on God’s Word and caught a multitude of 153 large fish.
Question: What’s the significance of the number 153? Answer: Many have come up with various numerological interpretations of the number 153, but here is the one I like best: The Gospels record Jesus directly blessing a grand total of 153 people in 48 separate incidents!
Next question: How did the disciples recognize that it was Jesus? Answer: Increase. At first, the disciples didn’t know that it was Jesus who spoke to them, but as a result of catching a multitude of large fish they recognized that it was Jesus who spoke to them. The presence of God (Jesus) brought the blessing of God. Wherever Jesus was, prosperity and success were there. Wherever Jesus went, increase and abundance followed. Here is how this miracle of increase applies to you and me: Supernatural results (like those experienced by the disciples) can still be experienced in the lives of modern-day disciples. A disciple is a disciplined learner of God’s Word, and because you are learning the Word of God today, you qualify as a modern-day disciple.
Many people are struggling in their lives because they don’t believe that increase is God’s will for their life. Prior to their experience of increase, the disciples were tired and frustrated. John 21 verse 3 states, “They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.” If they were fishing all night, they were probably tired. If they caught nothing, they were probably frustrated.
If you are feeling tired and frustrated today, perhaps you need a miracle of increase in your life. You may be tired and frustrated with your career, with your marriage, with your children, with your environment, with your spiritual life, etc., etc., etc. However, before you can receive your miracle of increase, you have got to believe that it is God’s will to turn your situation around just like He did for the disciples in our Success Scripture today.
Here is an encouraging thought: Jesus will bring increase into your life just like He did for the disciples. This is confirmed in Psalm 115 verse 14, which reads, “May the Lord give you increase more and more, you and your children.” This confirms that increase is God’s will for every area of your life!
