Ephesians 5:33 (AMP)
However, let each man of you [without exception] love his wife as [(being in a sense] his very own self; and let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband [that she notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates and esteems him; and that she defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly].
Husbands are to love their wives, but notice how God calls wives to treat their husbands. Wow, men need a lot of TLC (tender loving care) in the form of encouragement. I think this is true in part because the world has a way of beating men down, frustrating them, and leaving them feeling discouraged. It seems that men may be the weaker sex after all because of all the encouragement they need.
The long litany addressed to wives in regard to their husbands could be summed up with this phrase: Wives, use every opportunity to encourage your husband! This is the reason the wife has such a profound effect on the success or failure of her husband. If she is an encouragement to him, he will walk out of his home in the morning and think he can conquer the world.
Encouragement is one of the most powerful gifts a wife can give her husband, and it is also one of the most powerful gifts any woman can give to a man. If a husband does not receive that encouraging word when he leaves for work in the morning, or worse still, gets a discouraging word, he walks out of his home with low self-esteem, and he will probably be less effective out on the job. Here is how that situation gets worse: The discouraged husband then goes down to the office and one of the women he works with gives him encouragement all day long…and that scenario becomes one of the ways extramarital affairs sneak into marriages. I am not making an excuse for any husband’s marital infidelity (there’s no excuse for it), but proper encouragement for husbands is as important as the air they breathe. Respect for a husband includes encouragement from his wife.
Wives, if your husband does not receive encouragement from you, he must get it from someone else. A husband can hear 100 negative statements during the course of a day, but if he comes home to a wife who will give him just one encouraging word, those 100 negative statements seem meaningless in comparison. The positive encouragement of a wife will nullify an incredible amount of negativity a husband receives during the course of his day. Wives, encouragement is your special gift. Wives, make an effort to find out how your husband receives encouragement best. You can find creative ways to notice him, regard him, honor him, prefer him, venerate him, esteem him, defer to him, praise him, and admire him.
Encouragement is an expression of the divine nature. Our CD series, “Expressions of the Divine Nature,” will give you numerous ways to encourage your spouse and guarantee the success of your marriage.
